Homemade Tortillas!!

Homemade Tortillas!!

Okay, so my husband had the car and wasn't going to be home for awhile and I was craving some kind of wrap but we were out of tortillas. I was super bummed because I really wanted a wrap and then remembered my friend asking me the other day if I have ever tried making my own tortillas. I had never thought about making them until NOW!

I jumped on the most reliable site for recipes I could think of, PINTEREST, and found a great recipe by I Wash, You Dry and it was super simple. I had everything that it called for and so I said what the heck and tried it. Oh My Goodness, it actually worked and they tasted amazing.

So that night I decided to make chicken tacos with my homemade tortillas and see how my hubby liked them. It was a SUCCESS!  He loved them, said he was impressed and also admitted he had never made tortillas before. I was so excited that I am making more today!

Hope you guys try it out! And let me know they turn out for you and your family.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

Instructions:

  1. Sift together flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl. Use your hands to incorporate the shortening until the mixture becomes crumbly. Pour in the warm water and mix with your hands till a slightly sticky dough ball forms.
  2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until dough becomes smooth and elastic. Wrap in plastic wrap, or cover with a towel, and let rest on the counter for 30 minutes.
  3. Once rested, divide up into about 16 equal parts, roll out with a rolling pin ( or in my case a baby bottle ) to about 1/4 inch thick. You want them pretty thin. Then heat up a skillet and place, let heat until golden brown marks start to appear and then flip to other side.
  4. Make sure youeither eat them right away or keep them sealed so they don't dry out. Re-heat in the microwave if you will be using them later.
*If you roll your dough out to thick, don't worry you will just have flat bread instead of a tortilla :)
